Notes in the sidebar is a writing space of your own: a reading list, a protocol you're drafting, a handover for a colleague, what you want to raise at the next practice meeting.

A note is never attached to a patient, so nothing you write here reaches their record or an invoice. Clinical detail belongs in an encounter, which is attached to the patient it is about and travels with their history. Record an encounter covers that.

Notes is on the sidebar of a practitioner profile. A practice support profile doesn't have it.

Start a note

Press the + at the top of the note list, or press N whenever the cursor isn't in a field. The note opens with the title Untitled and the cursor in the title field.

There is no save button. Practor saves what you type to this device as you go, and sends it to the server every thirty seconds, when you switch tabs, and when you close the page. If you close the browser mid-sentence and come back, the note picks up where you left it.

The list groups by when each note was last edited.

Read the save status

The header shows a save status. It matters most when it stops saying Saved.

StatusWhat it means
SavedThe server has it
Saved on this deviceWritten locally, not sent yet. The next sync sends it
SavingOn its way
Offline, saved on this deviceNo connection. Practor sends it when you're back online
Not saved, retryingThe server refused it. Practor tries again, backing off each time
Not saved, you have view access onlySomebody shared this note with you to read
Not saved, this note changed elsewhereSomebody edited it after you opened it. Reload appears beside the status

Format a note, and add a file

Type / in the note for the block menu: headings, bullets, numbers, a check list, a quote and a toggle list.

The same menu adds a file. Image takes JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF or AVIF. File takes a PDF, a document or a spreadsheet. Either one is up to 10MB.

Deleting a block with a file in it doesn't delete the file straight away, so undo brings the file back with the block. After thirty seconds it goes for good.

Image, File and Voice dictation sit under Media at the end of the menu.

Dictate instead of typing

Press / and choose Voice dictation. Practor asks for your microphone and types what you say into the note, punctuation and all, until you press Stop.

Not every browser can do it. One that can't says Voice dictation is not supported in this browser, and the answer is to open the note in Chrome or Edge.

Dictation is an AI feature, so it asks for access the first time. If your practice hasn't been granted it, the dialog says which step you're waiting on.

A session runs for ten minutes and then stops. Ninety seconds of silence stops it too, so a long pause mid-consultation ends the session rather than holding it open.

Find a note

The list groups by when a note was last edited: today, yesterday, earlier this week, earlier this month, older. The count beside the heading has a + when there are more to load.

Search from the box at the top, or press / from anywhere outside the editor. It reads titles and text, and it needs at least two characters. The segmented control under it narrows the list:

  • All notes is everything you can open
  • Mine is what you wrote
  • Shared with me is what a colleague wrote and gave you

Share a note

Press Share in the header. Only the person who wrote a note can share it, so this changes nothing on a note a colleague gave you.

Share with entire team opens it to everyone in the practice, to read. Switching it back off asks you to confirm, and it leaves the people you named alone.

To share with one person, pick them under Add a colleague. They start on View, and the dropdown beside their name changes that to Edit. The ✕ at the end of the row takes their access away.

That list holds the practitioners in your practice. Patients are never on it, practice support profiles have no Notes page of their own, and there is no way to send a note outside the practice.

The team switch, and everyone you have named.

Export a note

More options in the header, then Export as PDF or Export as text. The file downloads with the note's title as its name.

Delete a note

More options, then Delete note. It appears on your own notes only, and Practor asks you to confirm because there is no way back. Everyone you shared it with loses it at the same time.
